3rd annual Foreign Language club english camp in Hiwasa!

The Foreign Language Club’s annual English Camp returned for its third year. The Foreign Language club was very excited to return to Hiwasa, with a very special guest; Joyce, an ALT from New York city. The camp brought together students determined to improve their English, and their muscles as well. 

In order to improve English skills, the camp had one rule: English only! Anyone caught speaking Japanese had to do squats or push-ups. Double punishment for those who lied about it! I must admit I (the ALT) did a lot of push-ups as well. 

The first day kicked off with a scavenger hunt in the Hiwasa Sea Turtle Museum Caretta. Students learned about Hiwasa’s local history and its dedication to sea turtle conservation and raced in teams to find items and take pictures. Did you know there are only 8 species of sea turtles around the world? 

The competition was followed by a sweet reward of ice cream and some beach volleyball. We successfully got to 10 passes! 

Later that evening, the group turned on some bossa nova tunes and gathered in the kitchen to prepare lots of foods from around the world. On the menu: Chicken Noodle soup, Red Lentil Dahl, Garden Salad, Tex-Mex tacos and S’mores . Each dish was prepared together, with (mostly) english instructions. 

The night continued with a shocking mystery! Someone had kidnapped Lucy, the club’s sea turtle mascot! Students played detective and asked each other questions in order to find the culprit! Our kidnapper did too good of a job, and was not found out! 

The following morning, campers were treated to a cozy breakfast of French toast, Shakshouka and Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches. This would give the students energy to enjoy the Yakuoji temple and play some games together. 

Before heading home, everyone shared their favorite memories from the weekend. Sleepy students got on the train back home with improved English skills, stronger friendships, and a bit more muscle! When asked where students wanted to go next year, they all said; Hiwasa!
